Classic Jazz Guitar : Kenny Burrell‘s style was reflected in two early recordings that pointed the way to a style and format that Burrell would use throughout his career. The two early recordings, Autumn In New York (intro and first 32 bars) , which appeared on Blue Lights (1958) and Night at The Village Vanguard (1959) were made with the instrumentation of guitar, bass and drums.

Horace Silver on Jazz Online : The moody mode of “Song For My Father”, Silver’s most famous, reflects the Cape Verdean origins of the elder Silver, who raised his son in Norwalk, Connecticut. “I was always a skinny, weak, sickly kid,” the pianist reflects. “My Dad, god bless him, fed us well — my Mother died when I was nine —, but we weren’t into no nutrition. We ate vegetables out of a can, we didn’t know no better.”

Blogcritics : I do remember when I bought my copy of Grover Washington Jr’s Live at the Bijou. My jazz snobbery hadn’t even been formed yet, and all I knew is that the album was a lot of fun. Heck, I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t even aware of the concept of smooth jazz at the time.

Sonny Clark on Hardbop : “Actually, I wasn’t born in Pittsburgh,” he said. “I was born in a little coal mining town, about sixteen miles southeast of Pittsburgh, called herminie, Pa.–population about 800. I was raised there till I was twelve, then lived in Pittsburgh until I was nineteen, just turning twenty; then an older brother, who plays piano, took me out to the coast to visit an aunt.

spaceagepop : The King of the Tiki Hut. Denny not only brought exotica its biggest hit of all time with his #2 single of Les Baxter’s “Quiet Village,”, he gave two other key figures in exotica–Arthur Lyman and Julius Wechter–their starts, and influenced several generations of lounge performers.
