@hardbop : His tasteful skills as an accompanist have sometimes overshadowed his graceful but authoritative solo style. A master of bop, a poetic interpreter of popular tines, and an eloquent spokesman for the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, Flanagan was one of the jazz world’s most sought-after pianists.

@allmusic : Despite a heart condition, Flanagan continued performing until the end of his life, performing two-week stints at the Village Vanguard twice a year, recording and touring.

@last.fm : This confirmed Flanagan’s reputation for playing with versatility, and with a sensitive approach for the standards and ballads. From the mid 1960s to the late 1970s Flanagan was Ella Fitzgerald’s accompanist, before beginning a productive period in the 1980s and ’90s where he led many trio and quartet projects.
