Official Site : Ray was working as a sideman with another group on the night’s roster. When Ray started his own band, he called on David to be part of his group. In 1954, David began a twelve year association with the Ray Charles Band.
@allmusic : It is, in fact, Newman’s terse, earthy improvisations with Charles that remain his most characteristic work. Newman began a productive relationship with HighNote Records at the close of the 1990s, releasing an impressive series of albums
@last.fm : Always a musicians’ musician, Newman is best known for his hard bop style that has influenced whole generations of saxophone players of different genres.
