Wikipedia : This day (June 23, 2013), in Memphis, Tennessee, died Bobby Blue Bland, a;k.a. the Lion of the Blues an American singer of blues and soul.

Bobby Blue Bland : Because Bland neither composed nor played an instrument, he relied on others for songs and inspired instrumentation. Joe Scott, his bandleader and arranger, and for years one of Duke label owner Don Robey’s chief talent scouts, helped create Bland’s big-band sound.

@allmusic : All Bland had to offer was his magnificent voice, a tremendously powerful instrument in his early heyday, injected with charisma and melisma to spare.

@last.fm : For all his rough and raw vocal projections, Bland was backed by a band that delivered some of the smoothest and most modulated arrangements in the blues genre.
