Wikipedia : This day (April 12, 1940 ), in Chicago, Illinois, is born Herbert Jeffrey Herbie Hancock, an American pianist, keyboardist and composer.

Official Site : Herbie was a child piano prodigy who performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11. He began playing jazz in high school, initially influenced by Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans. He also developed a passion for electronics and science, and double-majored in music and electrical engineering at Grinnell College.

@Facebook : Depending on the day, Herbie Hancock might perform any number of roles. He’s the nation’s first-call jazz ambassador, a futuristic technology advocate, a dedicated educator, and of course, an American music luminary. Most of all, like all great artists he makes things new again. He did it for us with The New Standard, when he found the swing and the meaning in pop classics. He did it with his kaleidoscopic take on Gershwin’s World—and took home three Grammy® awards for it.

@last.fm : As part of Miles Davis’ “second great quintet” Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was later one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and jazz funk. Yet for all his restless experimentation, Hancock’s music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs “crossover” and achieve success among pop audiences. Probably the most influential era in Herbie Hancock’s extensive career is with the ”Headhunters” ensemble during the mid-late 70’s, including (among others) Paul Jackson on bass, Bennie Maupin on saxophones, Harvey Mason on drums, ”Wah Wah” Watson on guitar and Bill Summers on percussion.

@Discogs : Hancock is one of the best known modern jazz composers, creator of “Watermelon man” (which has been a basic reference point throughout his career), “Maiden Voyage”, “Dolphin Dance”, right through to the dance grooves of “Rockit”. Hancock also has the distinction of having made the largest-selling jazz record of all time in “Head Hunters”.
