Wikipedia : This day ( April 13, 2005), in St. Louis, Missouri, died Johnnie Johnson, an American pianist and blues musician whose work with Chuck Berry led to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Johnnie Johnson Blues & Jazz Society : Johnnie was rediscovered in 1986, when The Rolling Stones‘ guitarist Keith Richards sought out Johnnie for the documentary, Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll. Johnnie’s piano playing in the 1987 movie won him a host of new fans, including Keith Richards and Eric Clapton.

Blues Music Now : Who is this Johnnie Johnson, the casual rock and roll fan might ask? The simple answer is that Johnson was the piano player on “Maybellene” and most of Chuck Berry’s other well-known songs.

@last.fm : On New Years Eve 1952, Alvin Bennett had a stroke and could not perform. Johnson, searching for a last minute replacement, called a young man named Chuck Berry, an ex-convict and the only musician Johnson knew who because of his inexperience, would likely not be playing on New Years Eve.
