Wikipedia : This day (April 2, 1987), in Los Angeles, California, died Bernard ‘Buddy’ Rich, an American jazz drummer and bandleader.

Buddy Rich : By 1921, he was a seasoned solo performer with his vaudeville act, Traps the Drum Wonder. With his natural sense of rhythm, Rich performed regularly on Broadway at the age of four. At the peak of Rich’s early career, he was the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world.

The Unofficial Buddy Rich Website : Buddy Rich – I consider every drummer that ever played before me an influence, in every way. Every drummer that had a name, had a name because of his individual playing. He didn’t sound like anybody else, So everybody that I ever listened to, in some form, influenced my taste (Modern Drummer1977)

@last.fm : For most of the period from 1966 until his death, he led a successful big band in an era when the popularity of big bands had waned from their 1930s and 40s peak. His most popular performance was a big band arrangement of the Leonard Bernstein classic West Side Story.
