Wikipedia : This day (March 12, 1955), in New York City, New York, died Charles ‘Charlie’ Parker, Jr. , an American jazz saxophonist .

The Official Site of Charlie Yardbird Parker : When Parker was still a child, his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where jazz, blues and gospel music were flourishing. His first contact with music came from school, where he played baritone horn with the school’s band.

@allmusic : Charlie Parker was arguably the greatest saxophonist of all time. He could play remarkably fast lines that, if slowed down to half speed, would reveal that every note made sense

@last.fm : Early in his career Parker was dubbed Yardbird; this was later shortened to ‘Bird’ (or sometimes ‘Yard’) and remained Parker’s nickname for the rest of his life and inspiration for the titles of his works such as “Ornithology and Yardbird Suite”.
