Wikipedia : This day (December 17, 2011), in São Vicente, Cape Verde, died Cesária Évoraa, popular singer known as the Queen of Morna.

Official Website : Aged just twenty, she was already singing of romantic disappointments and the remoteness of the Cape Verde islands, expressing a remarkable melancholy that is illustrated by recordings made at the time, reissued at the end of 2008 on “Radio Mindelo”.

@allmusic : However, Évora never left her country, and gave up singing in the mid-’70s owing to lack of profit. In 1985, at the age of 45, she decided to return to music and traveled to Portugal to record two songs for an anthology of female Cape Verdean singers.

@last.fm : Long known as the queen of the morna, a soulful genre (related to the Portuguese fado) sung in Creole-Portuguese, she mixed her sentimental folk tunes filled with longing and sadness with the acoustic sounds of guitar, cavaquinho, violin, accordion, and clarinet.
